Admiral Linda Fagan Visits Her Alma Mater

 
On June 28, 2023, Dean Tolstoy and Director Dolšak hosted Admiral Linda Fagan, Commandant of the U. S. Coast Guard and SMEA alumna (MMA ’00). For reference, Admiral Fagan is the 27th Commandant of the United States Coast Guard (USCG), overseeing operations of more than 50,000 members and a fleet of 259 cutters, 200 aircraft, and 1,600 boats. Admiral Fagan was in Seattle to preside over the change of command ceremony for Healy, an active icebreaker homeported in Seattle.

Congratulations SMEA Class of 2023!

On Thursday, June 8th, 2023 the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs held its graduation ceremony.
A welcome was given by SMEA Associate Director, Ryan Kelly, followed by opening remarks from the College of the Environment Dean, Maya Tolstoy, and special keynote speaker Stephen Metruck, Port of Seattle Executive Director. Graduating students Andrea Richter-Sanchez and Kurt Ellison were nominated as class speakers.

Finding Common Ground: Digital Story Viewing

Please join us Tuesday, April 25th, 2023, from 12:00 to 1:30pm in the Burke Museum’s Cascade Room for Finding Common Ground: Digital Story Viewing. This is a collaborative event coproduced by University of Washington and Chief Leschi Schools students. 
The program will begin with a screening of the digital stories, followed by a discussion with the collaborators, and a chance to mingle over complimentary food from Off the Rez Cafe.

#HuskyGivingDay Complete!

Thank you for all who participated in this year’s #HuskyGivingDay. Your gift to the McKernan Fund helps SMEA continue training the next generation of interdisciplinary scholars. When the community giving platform closed  April 7th, SMEA had the highest donation amount in the College of the Environment and we tied for first place with the Atmospheric Sciences in terms of the number of gifts!
