
SMEA and Tulalip Tribes Partner on Successful Coastal Squeeze Workshop
SMEA Professor Patrick Christie, Co-PI Brad Warren of Global Ocean Health, and second year SMEA Student Haley Kennard, co-hosted a workshop with the Tulalip Tribes this past Monday, December 12th at the Tulalip Tribes Headquarters. The workshop, entitled “Navigating Coastal Squeeze: Identifying Needs and Priorities to Scale Up Estuarine Restoration in Puget Sound” was generously funded by Washington Sea Grant and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

SMEA Students Attend NOAA Sponsored Think Tank in Honolulu
SMEA students Lindsay Gordon and Grace Ferrara recently returned from a 3-day ‘think-tank’ in Honolulu, Hawaii where they focused on the Human Dimensions of Large-Scale Marine Protected Areas. This think-tank was hosted by large-scale marine protected area network Big Ocean and SMEA professor Patrick Christie along with other contributing organizations and sponsors such as National Geographic, NOAA, Conservation International, and Pew Charitable Trusts.

The Native Voice is Highlighted at this Year’s Arctic Encounter Symposium
The School of Marine and Environmental Affairs had a strong showing at this year’s Arctic Encounter Symposium, a yearly meeting hosted at the University of Washington’s Law School. Students and faculty were speakers, moderators, representatives of consulting firms, as well as there to just learn as much as possible from the diverse gathering.

On November 6 the UW School of Law brought together many of the world’s leading experts on ocean acidification in its first-annual Environmental Law Symposium. The symposium had a large turnout of 250+ attendees and included speakers such as Jay Manning of Cascadia Law Group PLLC and Dennis McLerran of EPA Region 10. SMEA Director Terrie Klinger and Affiliate Assistant Professor Jan Newton kicked off the morning science panel talking about the latest research and findings on ocean acidification.
