SMEA focal point to advise strategies for conserving migratory water birds in Asia-Pacific

SMEA David H. Smith Postdoctoral Fellow, Eduardo Gallo-Cajiao, has been nominated as a technical expert to the Intergovernmental Task Force to Address Illegal Hunting, Taking, and Trade of Migratory Birds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway under the UN Convention on Migratory Species. This appointment is on the back of Eduardo’s contribution to the understanding of hunting of migratory shorebirds and international governance for conserving migratory shorebirds in the Asia-Pacific region. Specifically, the Asia-Pacific region is host to the migration of thousands of migratory water birds that travel between Arctic and Boreal breeding grounds to wintering areas across Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Their survival, however, is threatened by widespread hunting across a vast region. Importantly, there is a suite of international governance processes at work to advance the conservation of such birds. Follow the story links to learn more about Eduardo’s recent work.
