SMEA Spring Speaker Series to Launch
With the Spring Quarter underway remotely, plans have been made to offer the inaugural SMEA Speaker Series virtually as well. Participants can join from the comfort of their own homes from 12:00 to 1:00pm PST, and tune in to hear from three exciting speakers covering a variety of current topics in the marine and environmental realm. While current students have the option to participate for credit, the series is open to all who are interested.

Natures, Peoples, and Justice: Collaborative land management and cultural burns in the Australian Capital Territory
Please join the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs, the Program on the Environment, EarthLab, and the Simpson Center for the Humanities on Thursday, February 6 from 4:00-5:30 pm in Communications 120 as we welcome Jessica Weir, PhD from the Institute for Culture and Society, Western Sydney University.

On Tuesday, October 22 the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs and the Quaternary Research Center welcomed Dr. Jake Rice, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, who gave a talk titled “Sustainable Use, Biodiversity and Climate Change – What is Success When the Goalposts Keep Moving?”
Keeping uses of natural resources sustainable has not been simple, especially in the ocean where governance has always been more complex than on land.

Join SMEA as we welcome Ussif Rashid Sumaila, who will speak about “Effective high seas management is necessary for the sustainability of the global ocean” Thursday, March 2, 2:30-3:20 in Fishery Sciences (FSH) 102.
Dr. Sumaila is Professor and Director of the Fisheries Economics Research Unit at the University of British Columbia. He received his Ph.D. from Bergen University, Norway, and holds a B.Sc.

SMEA and Tulalip Tribes Partner on Successful Coastal Squeeze Workshop
SMEA Professor Patrick Christie, Co-PI Brad Warren of Global Ocean Health, and second year SMEA Student Haley Kennard, co-hosted a workshop with the Tulalip Tribes this past Monday, December 12th at the Tulalip Tribes Headquarters. The workshop, entitled “Navigating Coastal Squeeze: Identifying Needs and Priorities to Scale Up Estuarine Restoration in Puget Sound” was generously funded by Washington Sea Grant and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
