SMEA Turns 50-An Interview with Director Nives Dolsak and Dr. Dave Fluharty

Congratulations, Phil!

SMEA Professor of Practice Phil Levin has been appointed to the White House! The Biden-Harris administration has announced Phil’s appointment as director of the inaugural United States National Nature Assessment (NNA). The NNA uses an interdisciplinary lens to review the impact of nature on everyday human life. An assessment is tentatively scheduled for release in 2026. During this appointment, Phil will pause his teaching and advising responsibilities within SMEA.

#HuskyGivingDay Complete!

Thank you for all who participated in this year’s #HuskyGivingDay. Your gift to the McKernan Fund helps SMEA continue training the next generation of interdisciplinary scholars. When the community giving platform closed  April 7th, SMEA had the highest donation amount in the College of the Environment and we tied for first place with the Atmospheric Sciences in terms of the number of gifts!

Fall Speakers Series Set to Launch

The School of Marine and Environmental Affairs is launching their quarterly Speakers Series during the month of October. Attendees will be able to attend in-person at the University of Washington Marine Studies Building, Room 268 or virtually via Zoom.
This quarter’s lineup features three speakers offering a variety of topics:
Thursday, October 13, 12-1 pm: Laura Nelson, Post-doc Research Associate, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory will present “Climate Impacts on the Traditional Seafood Species and Food Security of the Makah Tribe.”
Thursday, October 27, 12-1 pm: Yoshitaka Ota, Professor of Practice, UW SMEA, Director, Ocean Nexus will offer “What is Ocean Equity?”
Thursday, November 17, 12-1 pm: Jean Flema, Director, Ocean Defense Initiative “There’s Only One Ocean.”
