Q&A with Devon Lombard-Henley
Why did you decide to pursue a Master of Marine Affairs?
I’ve been a sailor all my life and love being out on or in the water. After studying marine biology in undergrad, I knew I wanted to learn more about human-ocean interactions and how environmental policy looks for coastal and marine areas. A masters in marine affairs felt like the perfect opportunity to build on my marine science background so that I can really make a difference in the future.
Why did you decide to attend the UW, and SMEA specifically, for graduate school?
I really liked the flexibility of the program and it allowed me to peruse a dual degree at the UW!
Tell us about your approach to the Courses-only track (what things are you focusing on? how are you choosing courses?)
I’m technically courses-only, but I’m doing a capstone with the Evan’s School for my dual degree (working with the WA department of ecology to improve communication with tribes). My courses are mostly focused on environmental/climate change policy.
What has been your favorite class so far? Why?
I loved Ryan’s law class (SMEA515) and the Evan’s School class on energy policy (PUBPOL593) so far. My favorite class ever was a SMEA550 class called “change everything, abolition ecologies, & indigenous peoples’ self-determination” taught by Isaac Rivera.
What do you like most about SMEA?
I love the diversity of interests and topics that students in the program are interested in. It’s very cool to learn from other people with different backgrounds, but the same general interest.
Who was your support network while pursuing your MMA? Did you have an alternative outlet?
My partner has been very helpful, especially with making sure I’m always fed! My cats have also been very supportive and always ready to join online class over zoom! I love getting outside whenever I can, so I walk dogs on the weekends to make sure I get out of the house when I don’t have class.
What is your favorite form of marine life and why?
I love marine invertebrates because there’s so much variety and cool adaptations in how they survive!
If your time in SMEA was a movie, what would be the title?
Two degrees and a million naps.
