Q & A With Yunzhou Li
What led you to pursue a Master of Marine Affairs?
Through my study and research at school, I realized the gap between scientific research and policy making. Most policy makers in marine conservation in China are biologists who are more concerned about natural efficiency rather than focusing on the interaction between ecosystem and human beings. I am curious about how to bridge the gap and would like to take a new perspective to look at the marine system.
Why did you choose UW’s SMEA for graduate school?
This program was very attractive to me because it offers multidisciplinary courses and matches my interest. In addition, I thought studying at UW, a top-rated university, would be lots of fun.
What are you writing your thesis about and why?
In my thesis, I am going to explore creating a network of marine protected areas in China. More than two hundred discrete MPAs have been established in China, but their effectiveness to conserve marine species, maintain a healthy ecosystem or provide recreational functions are under question. I am interested in framing the MPA network establishment and providing alternatives for MPA planning in the future.
What has been your favorite class at UW so far? Why?
My favorite class at UW is International Law of Sea by Professor Craig Allen. This was a huge challenge to me as a foreign student with zero experience in law, but later on I found it very interesting. It is not only about learning the UNCLOS, but also the way to use maritime laws to defend. I would highly recommend international students to take it.
What do you like most about SMEA?
SMEA People! They have abundant research or professional experience in marine affairs. Talking with them always inspires me.
What’s it like to live in Seattle? What do you do in your spare time?
Seattle is an amazing city. It is clean, safe and comfortable. In my spare time (actually not much), I love having a picnic in a park with my friends, doing grocery shopping in the International District and trying new restaurants in the neighborhood.
If you could design your ultimate job after graduating, what would it be and why?
I would like to work for MPA design and management since there is no scientific approach in MPA design in China so far and few MPAs are under proper management. Furthermore, I am interested in building a platform to improve Chinese’s understanding to MPA.
What is your favorite form of marine life, and why?
Maybe plankton. They are tiny but decisive to the whole ecosystem.
