Floodplain Prize and Scholarship for Morris ’22
Grace Morris ’22 has been using her time as an MMA student in the School of Marine and Environmental Sciences to explore environmental justice for underserved communities in floodplain areas. At SMEA, she’s been a student in Dr. Cleo Wölfle-Hazard’s Freshwater Ecologies lab. Her work alongside a team of other University of Washington students won 1st place and a $1000 scholarship at the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) 12th Annual Collegiate Student Paper Competition in Orlando, Florida on Thursday, May 19th! ASFPM partners with organizations and agencies across the private and public sector to host an annual, national conference focused on flooding, planning, and sustainability. From a nationwide pool of applicants, Morris, Jocelyn Johnson from the College of Engineering, and Ziyang Liu from the College of the Built Environments were selected as semi-finalists for their paper “Threshold-Based Planning for Westport, Washington: a Case Study.” Grace represented the team at the Conference where she explained sense-of-place and community-engagement best practices to plan for climate change and an uncertain flood future. The ASFPM board members who judged the competition told Grace her “enthusiasm for sound policy is infectious.” Congratulations to Grace and the rest of her team!
