SMEA Speaker Series Returns Virtually for Autumn 2021

The SMEA Speakers Series resumes this quarter, and will continue to have speakers presenting virtually to allow for alumni and friends of SMEA to join us over the lunch hour to learn from this impressive line-up of speakers. The talks are open to all, and will include a presentation and an opportunity for Q&A.

Thursday, October 14th 12-1pm PST: Ed Gallo-Cajiao, David. H Smith Postdoctoral Fellow, SMEA

Crowdfunding biodiversity conservation

Ed Gallo-Cajiao (he/him) is the David H. Smith Postdoctoral Fellow with SMEA. He is an environmental scientist with an interest in the governance dimensions of biodiversity conservation. His work typically focuses on birds, but he also has an interest in mammals. He is passionate about science communication.

Healthy people, healthy environment: Advancing environmental public health in Washington State

Laura Johnson (she/her) is Office Director for Environmental Public Health Sciences within the Division of Environmental Public Health at the Washington State Department of Health. She is a SMEA graduate and has worked in a variety of roles at the Department of Health since 2012. Before moving to Washington State, she was based in Washington, D.C., working globally on avian and pandemic influenza prevention and control.

Thursday, November 18th 12-1pm PST: Max Lambert, Senior Research Scientist, WA Dept. of Fish & Wildlife

(Mal)adaptation, social inequality, and the complexity of conservation in cities

Dr. Lambert (he/him) recently transitioned almost a year ago to his position at WDFW where he leads a group of scientists studying pressing conservation and restoration problems in the state. Prior to this position, he was a David H. Smith postdoctoral fellow based out of UC Berkeley and the University of Washington. He received his Ph.D from the Yale School of the Environment and his bachelors of science from UC Davis in Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology.
