New publication on Marine Spatial Planning by SMEA’s Fluharty

Associate Professor David Fluharty is the co-author of a new paper in PLoS One, entitled “Integration at the Round Table: Marine Spatial Planning in Multi-Stakeholder Settings.” Fluharty and his co-authors compared how Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) is carried out in Belgium, Norway, and the United States to demonstrate the differences in integration of stakeholders and governmental levels among the countries, and along the factors ofgovernance settings, economic activities, external drivers, spatial scales, incentives and objectives, varying approaches to legislation and political will. Their findings will help future developers of MSP – and those currently implementing and sustaining it – with important information about the required elements for success.
